This summary of some of Nyad&#8217;s lies shows why you shouldn&#8217;t.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Manhattan Island<br \/>\n<\/strong>Nyad claims to be the first woman to have swum around Manhattan, but she is the seventh, a fact of which she is well aware. Timeline:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>1978\u2014<\/strong>In her book <em>Other Shores<\/em>, Nyad acknowledges the first and sixth woman to swim around the island and alludes to the others.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1981\u2014<\/strong>Nyad makes first &#8220;first woman&#8221; claim. See \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/nyadfactcheck.com\/articles\/1981.10.31.The_Journal_Herald.jpg\">I swam 20 years; I had enough<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>2011\u2014<\/strong>CNN investigates and Nyad comes clean . . . sort of.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2012\u2014<\/strong>Nyad again claims to be the first woman.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2015 \u2014<\/strong>Nyad devotes a chapter of her latest book, <em>Find a Way<\/em>, to her Manhattan first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. The English Channel<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u201cThe only . . . world-class swim I had tried and failed at back in my twenties,\u201d claims Nyad, \u201cwas going from Cuba to Florida.\u201d In 1976, however, Nyad failed in three attempts to cross the English Channel, THE world-class swim. She was 27.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Olympic Trials<br \/>\n<\/strong>In her 2015 commencement address at Lake Forest College in Chicago, Nyad details her experience competing in the Olympic trials. But Nyad never swam in any Olympic trials.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Cuba-Florida, 2013<br \/>\n<\/strong>Nyad claims to have swum, under her own power, \u201cfrom the rocks of Cuba to the beach of Florida in squeaky clean, ethical faction.\u201d The evidence points another way:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>OBSERVATIONS:<\/strong> Nyad claims that her two\u00a0observers took\u00a0\u201cvery specific long notes for every minute\u201d of the swim. In fact, the\u00a0observer reports contain gaping holes\u2014including one of over 6 hours.<\/li>\n<li><strong>GPS DATA:<\/strong> Nyad\u2019s GPS data shows an impossibly straight course. It also shows that Nyad tread water at 3-miles-per-hour during a 90-minute storm, maintaining the same pace at which she swam before and after the storm.<\/li>\n<li><strong>RATIFICATION:<\/strong> Nyad claimed that \u201cI\u2019m sure this swim will be ratified in due time. . . . \u201d Yet to date, over four years after the attempt, the swim remains unratified.<\/li>\n<li><strong>THE CALL:<\/strong> Shortly after the crossing, Nyad\u2019s people organized a conference call with experienced swimmers. Nyad claims to have convinced all but one or two \u201chaters\u201d that she completed the swim without breaking any rules.
