Earlier this month, I sent Diana Nyad a letter<\/a>. It addressed questions about her Cuba\u2013Florida crossing and how she might want to clear those up before the release of her biopic<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I copied the letter to 60 other people \u2014 journalists, folks involved with the film, and representatives of swimming organizations. I also sent a copy to Steven Munatones, Nyad’s most ardent supporter in the marathon swimming community.<\/p>\n

About a week after Munatones received the letter, he rode to Nyad\u2019s rescue, just like he did when he doctored her Openwaterpedia entry to retroactively and illegitimately ratify her Cuba\u2013Florida crossing<\/a>.

\nThis new rescue operation arrived via an email \u2014 subject line, \u201cDaniel Slosberg on Diana Nyad\u201d<\/a> \u2014 with a doctored document attached. \u201cI felt obliged to respond and share my position,\u201d Munatones writes to an unknown number of recipients of my biopic letter. He goes on to provide a brief C.V. along with his usual defenses of Nyad\u2019s Cuba-Florida crossing.<\/p>\n

Then, he mentions the included document, which he represents as WOWSA\u2019s report on Diana Nyad\u2019s Cuba\u2013Florida crossing<\/a>. \u201cThe attached independent report,\u201d he writes, \u201csupports my belief that Diana succeeded.\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. Please read the details of the report, if you have interest and time.\u201d<\/p>\n

But here\u2019s the problem: He only sent Part 1 of the two-part report. Moreover, someone \u2014 presumably Steven \u2014 removed every reference to part two.<\/p>\n

He also changed the table of contents to give the impression that he sent a complete copy of the original.<\/p>\n

Finally, he slapped on a WOWSA logo to minimize the likelihood anyone would question the report\u2019s authenticity.<\/p>\n

Why go to all that trouble when he could have just provided a link to the original<\/a>? Because Part 2 concludes that Nyad\u2019s crossing was never ratified. That\u2019s a message Steven and Diana want to keep to themselves.<\/p>\n

Toward the end of his email, Steven writes:<\/p>\n

Daniel is \u201clawyered up\u201d (his own words) and is apparently going to file lawsuits. I inform you of this because I will continue to counter Daniel\u2019s statements and actions against Diana Nyad \u2013 even if I will be sued.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In other words, he\u2019ll even go to court and risk his own money to defend Diana!<\/p>\n

But he won\u2019t have to do it against me.<\/p>\n

To sue him, I\u2019d have to show injury. But Steven hasn\u2019t hurt me. Rather, he keeps giving me gifts \u2014 like his since-deleted Openwaterpedia entry,\u00a0 \u201cWhydoesdanslosbergtrollswimmersandtellliesaboutDianaNyad.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 That page and its 55 siblings may be a smidge defamatory, but they solved a years-long mystery: Who vandalized Openwaterpedia<\/a> to artificially elevate Diana Nyad into the top tier of 1970s marathon swimmers?<\/p>\n

I should take Steven to dinner, not court.<\/p>\n

A few days after sending his initial message, Steven sent a second<\/a>. It indicates that WOWSA \u2014 an organization from which Steven recently departed on ostensibly amicable terms<\/a> \u2014 was not pleased. He writes that Quinn Fitzgerald, WOWSA\u2019s one remaining board member, and Tima Vlasto, the report\u2019s author, had \u201cinstructed\u201d him to send the email. It contains several admissions, including that he\u2019d sent an incomplete version of the report and didn\u2019t have the right to do so.<\/p>\n

He also links to the full version<\/a>. He could have avoided a lot of trouble by doing that the first time.<\/p>\n

Diana Nyad\u2019s lucky to have Steven Munatones, a supporter willing to fight her battles and, in the process, create problems for himself.<\/p>\n

Diana and I both owe Steven our gratitude.
