Billions of Gallons of Sewage Can\u2019t Be Wrong<\/h3>\n
I was in graduate school for Comparative Literature at NYU in 1975 and when I came back to school in the fall, after a summer on the world marathon swimming circuit, such as the annual swim across the Bay of Naples, from Capri to Naples, Italy...<\/pre>\n
Nyad may or may not have gone to NYU,* but she did<\/em> swim the Capri-Naples race in the summer of \u201975. It would be her last time: she finished fourth of seven women<\/a>, 14th overall\u2014not the best evidence for her \u201cgreatest long-distance swimmer in the world\u201d claim (see “The Best of the \u201970s”<\/a>).<\/p>\n
*Update: Nyad enrolled at NYU in 1973<\/a> and left at the end of the school year.<\/em><\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
It\u2019s hard to invent a first when the people who beat you are two feet away. It\u2019s much easier when they’re dead and can\u2019t refute your claims. Nyad\u2019s prospects for mining adoration and cash on the pro circuit having vanished, she needed to find another way.<\/p>\n
...a friend asked if anyone had ever swum around Manhattan...and why didn\u2019t I do something inspired right here in my own back yard, instead of in foreign waters?\r\n\r\nI checked with the Coast Guard as to the logistics and in planning with them, learned that in the early years of the 20th century, when the rivers of New York were much cleaner...<\/pre>\n

In order to swim in the 1930 race, swimmers had to ignore NYC health deptartment warnings.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
Nyad’s lying. The Coast Guard did not say that New York\u2019s rivers were dirtier in 1975, three years after the passage of the Clean Water Act<\/a>\u00a0than they were earlier in the century when they ran with raw sewage and industrial waste.<\/p>\n
Before the 1930 race in which Anne Priller Benoit became the fifth woman to circle Manhattan, New York City Health Commissioner Shirley Wynne urged swimmers not to compete (see article above right). He called the race \u201ca salty sewage contest.\u201d Wynne sent a police officer<\/a> to warn competitors that they risked contracting typhoid.<\/p>\n
Here\u2019s some content about the content of the city\u2019s rivers early and mid-century:<\/p>\n
1916<\/strong>\u2014New York Times<\/a><\/p>\n
At present not only New York City, but every other community fronting on the waters surrounding the city is discharging sewage, amounting to 700,000,000 of gallons daily, and it\u2019s constantly increasing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
1946<\/strong>\u2014Journal News (Nyack)<\/a><\/p>\n
The river ought not be allowed to become the overgrown sewer that it is\u2026.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
1954<\/strong>\u2014Troy Record<\/a><\/p>\n
As a result of the billions of gallons of sewage that daily pour into [the Hudson\u2019s] waters\u2026, the river today is little better than an open sewer\u2026.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
So, no, the early years of the 20th century were not good for dips in the Hudson, et al. No Coast Guard officer in his or her right mind would have told Nyad it was.<\/p>\n
Be Still My Pounding Heart<\/h3>\n
According to Nyad, she had heard only of men braving those waters:<\/p>\n
...there were men who did swim around the island. Women were never mentioned to me.<\/pre>\n
\"\"<\/a>The passive voice, indispensable instrument of verbal evasion. Nyad plays it masterfully: \u201cWomen were never mentioned to me.\u201d In other words, \u201cIt\u2019s not my fault, don\u2019t blame me\u2014 I just went along for the ride.\u201d Don\u2019t even blame her for organizing the swim because she didn\u2019t plan it herself, or so the passive voice implies:<\/p>\n
The day was planned. The day ensued. And it has always, always been the fondest memory of my former marathon swimming career. My heart still pounds when I fly into New York and the glorious expanse of the Hudson reminds me of that October 6, nearly 36 years ago.<\/pre>\n
What kind of person insists that their fondest memory is one that they know is a lie?<\/p>\n
Surprise!<\/h3>\n
So imagine my mind-boggling surprise, all these many years later, now that I am suddenly back in the marathon swimming world, preparing to swim from Cuba to Florida this summer, after not swimming a stroke since 1979, to hear that there were in fact one or maybe two or maybe even as many as half a dozen women who did swim around Manhattan back in the early days!!!!!<\/pre>\n
Imagine my<\/em> mind-boggling surprise when I read that nonsense. In her 1978 memoir, Other Shores<\/em><\/a>, Nyad wrote:<\/p>\n
\"\"<\/a>She was not surprised \u2014 mind-bogglingly or otherwise. Diana did her research. She knows the names and times of the \u201chalf a dozen women who did swim around Manhattan back in the early days!!!!!\u201d She has lied about it for at least ten years. [Update 26 Nov. 2017: Nyad also lied about \u201cnot swimming a stroke since 1979.\u201d See No Escape!<\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n
The history is unclear.<\/pre>\n
No, it\u2019s not. See above and\u00a0here <\/a>and here<\/a> and\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n
The dissemination of accurate information has not followed an empirical path.<\/pre>\n
Huh? What does that mean? A guess: \u201cThe truth is easy to find, and it shows that I\u2019m a liar. So, I need to say that it\u2019s inaccurate.\u201d Or something like that.<\/p>\n
Sports Authorities<\/h3>\n
I am waiting for the most reputable historians of the sport to dig further and publish their research as to their collective best versions as to who did in fact circle Manhattan, when and how.<\/pre>\n
\"\"<\/a>When Nyad gets caught in a big lie, she summons amorphous authorities to back her claims. For Manhattan, it\u2019s \u201cthe most reputable historians of the sport\u201d with their \u201ccollective best versions\u201d spilling from their satchels. In the Cuba-Florida crossing, Nyad conjured \u201causpices of the sport and different record keepers\u201d to judge the sketchy accounts of her endeavor.<\/p>\n
But you can toss your shovels back into the shed. No digging required. Six women swam around Manhattan between 1916 and 1959, and Nyad knows it. Wait time: zero.<\/p>\n
We need to learn more about one Ida Elionsky....<\/pre>\n
No, we don\u2019t. Nyad already told us about her. See above.<\/p>\n
We have some records about the success of one Amelia \u201cMillie\u201d Gade circling in 1921.<\/pre>\n

Was that an admission hiding under 500 gallons of effluent? In fact, we DO have some records about one Mille (not \u201cMillie\u201d) Gade<\/a> who circled Manhattan in 1921<\/a> and who, in 1926, became the second woman to swim the English Channel<\/a>. But Nyad knew that already.<\/p>\n
And there are others who deserve research efforts, too.<\/pre>\n
If that weren\u2019t so sad, it would be funny.<\/p>\n
