During the COVID lockdown, Diana Nyad took members of her walking group,\u00a0 EverWalk<\/a>, on two virtual journeys: one from Cuba to Florida \u00a0(Diana walked on water!) and another along le chemin de la libert\u00e9<\/em>, “The Freedom Trail.”<\/p>\n

Those who signed up monitored their progress using a step-tracking app, WalkerTracker<\/a>, so they could follow “the actual story of Diana Nyad’s mother Lucy” and her “escape from the Nazis over the famous Chemin de la Libert\u00e9<\/em> in the Pyrenees.”<\/p>\n

\"Virtual<\/a><\/p>\n

For those of us who missed the virtual Pyrenees walk, Diana kindly posted an abridged version of her tale, \u201cMy Mother\u2019s Journey to Freedom\u201d<\/a> (archived<\/a>). Here\u2019s a summary:
\n<\/p>\n

By the time Germany invaded France in May 1940, Lucy, then 15, had lived 12 years in Paris with her wealthy aunt and uncle, Ingeborg and Atherton Curtis. The Curtises collected art and, according to Diana, enjoyed entertaining \u201cthe exciting artists of the day, Henri Matisse, Paul Gaugin [sic<\/em>], F. Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda, to name a few.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gertrude Stein and Alice Toklas lived next door and popped over every now and then. \u201cMs. Stein encouraged my mom to write,\u201d says Diana, \u201cand Lucy as a 13-year-old won a continent-wide writing contest and was sent to England to meet the Queen.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the invasion, Atherton, Ingeborg, and Lucy fled to \u201ca little beachside cottage in Normandie, on the English Channel coast.\u201d<\/p>\n

The three returned to Paris after the Germans occupied the city in June 1940. Atherton, Ingeborg, and Lucy remained there \u201cuntil the beginning of 1943.\u201d Nyad continues:<\/p>\n

\n

It was a shocking day when the Nazis overtook my mother\u2019s home on Rue Notre Dame du Champs. They pulled the well-known works of art from the walls and ate their meals directly off the canvases. And they quickly discovered the Jews Atherton and Ingeborg were hiding. Not only were the Jews sent off to camps, but my mother\u2019s aunt and uncle were sent, too, for the \u201ccrime\u201d they committed in protecting the Jews. From that horrific day, my mother only 17 years old, she never saw her beloved aunt and uncle again. And she learned later that they both died in the camps.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Diana goes on to sketch Lucy\u2019s perilous trip over the Pyrenees. German surveillance had \u201cincreased dramatically since November 1942,\u201d but Lucy manages to evade it. She makes it to Portugal, where she boards a ship bound for New York.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll my mother\u2019s life,\u201d writes Nyad, Lucy remained \u201cfull of love for her Uncle Atherton and her Aunt Ingeborg for making her their own daughter . . . . and for giving her a magical childhood on Rue Notre Dame des Champs in Paris.\u201d But \u201cLucy couldn\u2019t speak when it came to her \u2018parents\u2019 perishing in the death camps.\u201d<\/p>\n

That’s because they didn’t.<\/p>\n

Nor did much else in Nyad\u2019s latest quarrying of the Holocaust for story ideas. Diana once again plundered public accounts of hardships and atrocities, exploiting other peoples\u2019 suffering to gin up her tales.<\/p>\n

The Truth<\/h5>\n

On February 7, 1941, 15-year-old <\/em>Lucy boarded a ship in Lisbon<\/a> bound for New York. She arrived there ten days later. If she crossed the Pyrenees at all \u2014 that early in the war, there would have been no reason to<\/a> \u2014 she could have taken one of the easier of the many routes. According to one historian, there were between 125 and 200;<\/a> Nyad implies there was just one. And she wouldn’t have been subject to the increased security that began in 1942.<\/p>\n

In October 1943, Atherton and Ingeborg died in their Paris home two days apart.<\/p>\n

Nyad\u2019s tale contains too many more lies to address here. For instance, there’s that \u201clittle beachside cottage in Normandie,\u201d the “exciting artists” who visit the Curtises, and Lucy\u2019s audience with the Queen (England had a king at the time). I\u2019ve cataloged them on a separate page<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u2022 \u2022 \u2022<\/strong><\/p>\n

If Diana\u2019s first Holocaust survivor fabrication<\/a> didn\u2019t disqualify her from adulation, ratification, and whatever else she wants, this second misappropriation of Holocaust trauma should.<\/p>\n

The Nazis murdered millions, but Atherton and Ingeborg Curtis weren’t among them. Thousands risked and often lost their lives escaping over the Pyrenees. However, according to Craig R. Gralley, a former CIA analyst<\/a> who attempted to retrace the steps of American Virginia Hall, a World War II super-spy who fled over the mountains with the Gestapo in pursuit, those who risked the crossing were “British and American pilots shot down over Nazi-occupied France, Jews facing deportation to death camps, [and] Frenchmen escaping forced labor in Germany.”<\/p>\n

That may not be a complete list. But in 1940 and early 1941, any inventory wouldn’t have included teenagers from wealthy American families.<\/p>\n

Nyad’s Fans Minimize Deceit<\/h5>\n

Despite the magnitude of Diana’s lies, we now have an industry devoted to minimizing them. Recent puff pieces in Vanity Fair<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em> Deadline<\/a>, and Variety<\/a><\/em> abet Nyad’s fraud by calling her lies “misstatements,” “exaggerations,” “ambiguities,” and other euphemisms that stray so far from “lies” that they become lies themselves.<\/p>\n

Entertainment news outlets aren’t the only ones that minimize Nyad’s deceit. \u201cDiana<\/em>\u00a0is a human being,\u201d wrote Evan Morrison, cofounder of the Marathon Swimmers Federation<\/a>, on August 30, \u201cimperfect as we all are.\u201d Nyad echoed Morrison the next day<\/a>: \u201cI\u2019m human, and I like to think that I\u2019ve lived a life that now makes me proud of who I am.\u201d<\/p>\n

If Nyad had a superpower, it would be the ability to remain proud of herself while conning people into believing monstrous fabrications. If she had another superpower, it would be convincing people she\u2019s not a compulsive liar and a charlatan.<\/p>\n

Diana is<\/em> human, but she\u2019s not \u201cimperfect as we all are.\u201d There\u2019s “I’m only human” imperfect. Then there\u2019s \u201cThey pulled the well-known works of art from the walls and ate their meals directly off the canvases [and] sent off my great-aunt and uncle to die in the camps” imperfect.<\/p>\n

Learning from Lucy<\/h5>\n

Nyad ends \u201cMy Mother\u2019s Journey\u201d with a pep talk. She exhorts her WalkerTracker-wearing EverWalkers to learn from her mother’s generation the lesson she learned from Lucy Nyad:<\/p>\n

Never, ever, give up. Onward EverWalk Nation! Let\u2019s walk with each other through these challenges \u2013 and all that the world is giving us to be stronger, kinder, more compassionate and better human beings!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

She left out \u201cmore honest.\u201d<\/p>\n
