\"\"\u201cThe Curtis family,\u201d wrote Diana Nyad in her 2015 memoir, Find A Way<\/em>,<\/p>\n

had come from a century-old successful clan of New Yorkers, starting back in the early 1800s with the first Lucy Winslow, one of the first female physicians in Manhattan. (p. 36)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But Lucy Winslow, Nyad\u2019s great-great-grandmother, came from Maine, didn\u2019t move to New York until the mid-1800s, and was not a physician<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But Miss\u00a0<\/em>Lucy Winslow was not the\u00a0Mrs.<\/em> Winslow of soothing syrup fame. Diana confused Lucy with her mom. Before I explain, we\u2019ll need a bit more background from Find a Way<\/em>:
\n<\/p>\n

This forebear Lucy evidently invented a soothing syrup for babies\u2026. The syrup was laced with a pacifying ingredient, and it was the consumer product, the rage, of its time, catching lightning in a bottle when Dr. Winslow\u2019s husband, Jeremiah Curtis, threw his marketing skills into it. (ibid)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

First things first: the product\u2019s namesake was Mrs. Charlotte Winslow, Lucy\u2019s mother. Charlotte\u2019s husband was Joseph Winslow, a Maine farmer.<\/p>\n

And what made Mrs. Winslow\u2019s Soothing Syrup the rage of its time? Morphine \u2014 Nyad\u2019s \u201cpacifying ingredient\u201d \u2014 and alcohol.<\/p>\n

Charlotte, like her daughter, was neither a nurse nor a physician. And she probably didn\u2019t ply her babies with opiates. The real brains behind the brew likely belonged to Charlotte\u2019s son-in-law, Jeremiah Curtis, a druggist in Bangor, Maine. He probably concocted Mrs. Winslow\u2019s Soothing Syrup sometime after marrying Lucy Winslow in 1829.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>A \u201cDr. Curtis\u2019s Soothing Syrup\u201d might have caught on given its contents. But it would have faced intense competition from the many other doctor-denominated, morphine-laced patent medicines available at the time. Dr. Seth Arnold\u2019s Cough Killer, right, is just one example.<\/p>\n

The ambitious Jeremiah, however, saw a better way. In a brilliant stroke of promotional misdirection, he affixed his mother-in-law\u2019s name \u2014 a name that oozed calm and dignity \u2014 to his dangerous concoction.<\/a><\/p>\n

Someone in the Curtis family began selling Mrs. Winslow\u2019s Soothing Syrup no later than 1845. Whether it was Jeremiah (as per most sources<\/a>), or his brother Jacob, Jr. (as the ad below seems to indicate), or some combination thereof, I can’t say.<\/p>\n

But I can <\/em>say that the real\u00a0Mrs. Winslow (i.e. Charlotte) lived her entire life in Maine. She passed away in 1850, long before the wild profits from her eponymous potion began rolling in. Her Curtis descendants, however, pocketed a fortune before various governments forced them to remove morphine from the mixture.<\/p>\n

The family must have invested well. Proceeds funded Jeremiah\u2019s grandson\u00a0Atherton Curtis<\/a>, a well-known art collector and patron (and the relative who raised Nyad\u2019s mother, Lucy Winslow Curtis, in Paris). The proceeds also funded Jeremiah\u2019s daughter, Laura Curtis Bullard<\/a>, an author who helped bail out Susan B. Anthony\u2019s weekly women\u2019s rights newspaper,\u00a0The Revolution<\/em>. A\u00a02011 version of Anthony\u2019s Wikipedia page<\/a> mentions Bullard\u2019s connection to \u201ca popular morphine-containing patent medicine.\u201d It also notes that Anthony banned patent medicine ads from\u00a0The Revolution<\/em> but that such ads began appearing after Bullard\u2019s takeover.\u00a0 Anthony\u2019s current Wikipedia entry<\/a> has been redacted to exclude specifics about the source of Bullard\u2019s wealth.<\/p>\n

The Curtis financial legacy eventually attracted Diana\u2019s con artist stepfather, Aristotle Z. Nyad. And the Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup fortune likely funded Diana\u2019s private school education\u2014Pine Crest Preparatory School, Emory University, Lake Forest College\u2014and her unprofitable globetrotting on the pro swimming circuit.<\/p>\n

The Curtis storytelling legacy provided a foundation for Nyad\u2019s own flexibility with facts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Charlotte had been dead almost 75 years by the time that final ad had her prescribing her son-in-law\u2019s toxic broth. Moreover, box jellies are rarely fatal. No hyperbole.<\/p>\n
