No footage here but <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/hbXqfXz55Hs?t=21s\">us chickens<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>If her swim were a loaf of bread, all we\u2019d have left are the heels \u2014 Nyad jumping into the water and swimming away from Cuba, Nyad shuffling up onto a beach in Florida \u2014 and a few crumbs from the rest of the loaf.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll find two or three of those crumbs \u2014 possibly from Don McCumber, the captain of Nyad\u2019s kayak team \u2014 in the video below. I got footage of water breaks, feeding breaks, medical breaks, the application of anti-jellyfish creams, and the donning of the ZERO FLOTATION suit and mask that Diana would put on 1 hour before sunset, and take off 1 hour after sunrise. (<a href=\"http:\/\/marathonswimmers.org\/forum\/discussion\/comment\/7843\/#Comment_7843\">Marathon Swimmers Forum,<\/a> username Woodkayaker)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But it\u2019s all gone.<\/p>\n<p>Why? Probably because Nyad didn\u2019t want to get caught like she did in 2012.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"return1\"><\/a>After her second attempt that year, it became clear from crew video that Nyad held onto the boat. The film\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.slackerwood.com\/node\/3537\">debuted in March 2013<\/a> at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas. It also played at the Dallas International Film Festival in April of that year. In other words, it was ready to go months before Diana\u2019s triumph, almost as if Diana knew she\u2019d finish.<\/p>\n<p>And so she did. Wheeler, who had filmed the entirety of some of his aunt\u2019s previous attempts, skipped this one. But he materializes at Smathers Beach on\u00a0 September 2, 2013, so that he could \u201cmassage that ending that I wanted\u201d (49:25 in <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/video\/diana-nyad-press-conference-2013-swimmer-63-discusses-20144167\">press conf.<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nyadfactcheck.com\/news_conf_transcript.html\">transcript<\/a>).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"alignright\"><p>To my imagination, this swim has developed in the genre of the old Greek myth\u2014grandeur and excellence lie at its core. I am truly a naiad of the sea. As Pheidippides ran the first marathon from Marathon to Athens in 490 B.C., I shall swim the ultimate marathon to Marathon Key. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterworldbooks.com\/product\/detail\/Other-Shores-9780394501758\">Other Shores<\/a>, p. 174)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A week or so after the swim, \u201cThe Other Shore 2.0\u201d (less the \u201c2.0\u201d) appears online. In November, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afterellen.com\/tv\/202146-the-other-shore-the-diana-nyad-story-airs-tonight-on-showtime\">debuts on Showtime<\/a>. With the new ending, Diana is no longer the quixotic kook of yore, tilting at waterwheels and <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/HuCLbsx1dDw\">spewing nonsense at the heavens<\/a>. Now she\u2019s the living embodiment of a mythological hero who faced off against Poseidon and won.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"return2\"><\/a>Given the turnaround time, though, our \u201cnaiad of the sea\u201d(see quote above right) didn\u2019t have time to vet the footage. In addition to the usual lies,<a href=\"#notes\">\u00b2<\/a> we have film of Nyad committing two of the deadly sins of marathon swimming: touching and being touched.<\/p>\n<p>Having likely been handled throughout, all the touching concern at swim\u2019s end was just melodramatic misdirection:<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" style=\"border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hl3Eqkl-8E8?version=3&amp;rel=1&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;fs=1&amp;hl=en-US&amp;autohide=2&amp;wmode=transparent\" width=\"420\" height=\"236\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>All of the above footage probably dates from previous attempts. But Nyad, after first claiming that the 2013 swim was different contact-wise\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We did not break one rule. I never of course touched a boat or another person. How about we look at the\u00a0non-touching performance of a real pretend swimmer? Pike asked Wheeler what drew him to make \u201cThe Other Shore.\u201d Wheeler says it\u2019s because he\u2019s sort of an adventurer himself. He doesn&#8217;t mention that Nyad\u2019s his aunt.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" style=\"border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XrKh5G2x7_Y?version=3&amp;rel=1&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;fs=1&amp;hl=en-US&amp;autohide=2&amp;start=98&amp;wmode=transparent\" width=\"420\" height=\"236\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><a name=\"notes\"><\/a>NOTES<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u201cCheating\u201d implies the existence of stated rules, of which there were none for Nyad\u2019s swim. In the absence of stated rules, we have to assume that she was following the generally accepted rules of the sport. However, statements after the swim from Nyad and her crew betray either a very porous understanding of marathon swimming rules or no understanding at all. <a href=\"#return1\">[return]<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Round up the usual suspects:\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThe only sort of world-class swim I had tried and failed at back in my twenties was going from Cuba to
