Don\u2019t Rock the Boat<\/h5>\n

Diana and\/or her handlers must have calculated that their boat already rode so low in the water that any movement might swamp it. So Diana either does not engage with skeptics; or, when she momentarily forgets herself and does\u00a0<\/em>engage, she quickly erases the evidence, pretends nothing happened, and hopes that the boat stops rocking.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

For instance, in the days after her crossing, she responded to some doubters on Facebook. Her response quickly disappeared, though its memory lives on in \u201c110 Miles\u2026.\u201d<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Ron et al\u2026Please allow me to join all of you and respond with each and every question and concern you have\u2026. I of course intend to be 100% open to any of your and others\u2019 valid probing into the accuracies of our historic crossing.[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Here\u2019s another deleted Facebook comment, also memorialized in \u201c110\u2026\u201d<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Hello, folks\u2026I\u2019m befuddled\u2026.breaking what rules? Getting help to get through a current? Have no earthly idea what you\u2019re talking about.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And who can forget Nyad\u2019s petulant, dissembling\u00a0Manhattan mea\u00a0semi-culpa (which you can still find in the\u00a0Wayback Machine<\/a>):<\/p>\n

\u2026imagine my mind-boggling surprise\u2026to hear that there were in fact one or maybe two or maybe even as many as half a dozen women who did swim around Manhattan back in the early days!!!!!\u00a0[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Finally, Diana deleted an entire conversation about her \u201cheat drip\u201d invention. We know that the conversation existed because she refers to it in a separate discussion that she also tried to remove:<\/p>\n

Who weighed in and what they weighed in on,\u00a0we may never know. Clearly, Diana and her advisers thought it best to try to limit the haters to hating amongst themselves:<\/p>\n

There are a couple that are still haters. Every day, every day, they\u2019re on Facebook, [they\u2019re] calling me that they don\u2019t believe I ever swam around Manhattan Island. They don\u2019t believe\u2026they think I\u2019m an absolute fraud and I\u2019ve never done anything I\u2019ve said I\u2019ve done. What can I do? At about four minutes<\/a> into that documentary, Nyad claims to be the first woman to swim around Manhattan. She hasn\u2019t told this lie on camera since her \u201cmind-boggling surprise\u201d of June, 2011.<\/p>\n

\nNyad posts the\u00a0\u201cResponse to Heat Drip Dialogue\u201d<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u2026Let me first say that I certainly hope that all of you out there know of my pedigree for many years in this sport. I have always upheld the highest ideals. \nThree days later, in a comment that you can still find in situ\u2014probably because all of the other commenters vigorously support Diana\u2014she writes:<\/p>\n

\u2026I will do the right thing. I would never sully all the effort my Team and I have given to this historic Quest\u2026just as I would never disrespect the sport that has taken me through so many athletic and life adventures. Thanks, everybody. (Facebook<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

However, in May of 2012 an extended profile of Nyad appeared in Elle<\/em> magazine. The author, Rivka Galchen, wrote:<\/p>\n

Diana decided to try swimming around Manhattan. This had been done a few decades earlier by men but never by a woman. (\u201cThe Hunger\u2026,\u201d<\/a> 25 May 2012)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Nyad apparently did not attempt to correct the error. She repeated it a few months later. So, we can conclude that Diana\u2019s \u201cmind-boggling surprise\u201d \u2014 and her \u201cjoy and pride in honoring all great women athletes of all eras\u201d \u2014 lasted less than a year.<\/p>\n

The most likely discussion in which Nyad posted is this one: \u201cDid any of the journalists covering Diana Nyad<\/a>\u2026.\u201d If you click \u201cView 28 more comments,\u201d you\u2019ll see that Ron Collins wrote one of them, hence Diana\u2019s \u201cRon et al.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0RETURN<\/a><\/p>\n
