That was the extent of her championship pool swimming. In neither year was she the fastest high-schooler in Florida, and many young women nationwide were far faster.<\/p>\n<h5>The Facts<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>1964<br \/>\n<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nyadfactcheck.com\/articles\/1964.05.03._state_meet_gainesville.jpg\">Nyad swam 1:10.4<\/a>\u00a0to win the Florida High School Class A title in the 100-yard backstroke. Pat Fleming of Pompano Beach High School\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nyadfactcheck.com\/articles\/1964.05.10.state-2A-championships.jpg\">took the 2A division in 1:07.3<\/a>. Cathy Ferguson of Los Angeles won the U.S. Nationals in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nyadfactcheck.com\/documents\/nationals\/1964.05.sc-nationals-results.pdf\">1:01.4<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1967<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/nyadfactcheck.com\/articles\/sick\/1967.05.14.Fort_Lauderdale_News.jpg\">Nyad swam 1:06.7<\/a> to win her second Class A 100-yard backstroke title. In other races that year, at least two other Floridians went faster: Nyad&#8217;s teammate <a href=\"https:\/\/nyadfactcheck.com\/faw\/1967.07.fisher-106.jpg\">Nancy Fisher went 1:06.0<\/a>, and 12-year-old\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nyadfactcheck.com\/faw\/1967.03.tullis-105-1.jpg\">Libby Tullis swam 1:05.1<\/a>. Kaye Hall of Tacoma, Washington, won the U.S. Nationals in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nyadfactcheck.com\/documents\/nationals\/1967.05.sc-nationals.pdf\">1:01.6<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nyad didn\u2019t swim fast enough to qualify for the Nationals in either of those years. In <a href=\"https:\/\/nyadfactcheck.com\/documents\/nationals\/1964.05.sc-nationals-results.pdf\">1964<\/a>, 38 swimmers qualified in the 100 back and 37 in the 200. In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nyadfactcheck.com\/documents\/nationals\/1967.05.sc-nationals.pdf\">1967<\/a>, 46 qualified in the 100 and 39 in the 200. All of them swam faster than Nyad.<\/p>\n<p>She qualified for the Nationals twice in other years:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>1966 Short Course Nationals in Bartlesville, Oklahoma<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li type=\"circle\">Nyad swam 1:05.2 to place 19<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0in the 100-yard back.\u00a0Fifteen-year-old Canadian\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/elainetanner.ca\/\">Elaine Tanner<\/a>, a.k.a. \u201cMighty Mouse,\u201d won the event in 1:00.7.<\/li>\n<li type=\"circle\">Nyad swam 2:35.5 to place 16<sup>th\u00a0<\/sup>in the 200 back. Fifteen-year-old Judy Humbarger of Miami Shores\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nyadfactcheck.com\/images\/1966.04.18.humbarger-national-record.jpg\">won in 2:11.8.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>1968 short course nationals at the University of Pittsburgh<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li type=\"circle\">Nyad finished <a href=\"https:\/\/nyadfactcheck.com\/articles\/1968.04.dn-women's-nationals-lo.jpg\">36th in the 200-yard back<\/a>\u00a0in 2:22.7.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kaye_Hall\">Kaye Hall<\/a> of Tacoma, Washington, finished first in 2:10.8. Hall went on to win a bronze medal in the 200 at the Mexico City Olympics and take gold while setting a world record in the 100.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nyad knows her resume doesn\u2019t support labeling herself \u201ca champion pool swimmer,\u201d so she often lies about her record. A few examples:<\/p>\n<div style=\"font-size: 10pt; padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200808072328\/https:\/\/vault.si.com\/vault\/1971\/12\/06\/she-takes-a-long-swim-off-a-short-pier\"><em>Sports Illustrated<\/em><\/a>, 1971:<\/strong><br \/>\nIn the next three years she won the 100-yard backstroke at six state meets, but she never surpassed her 12th-place finish in the nationals.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\n<div style=\"font-size: 10pt; padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><em>Other Shores<\/em>, 1978:<\/strong><br \/>\n[Coach Jack Nelson] helped me improve enough within that first year to become the best in the state of Florida at both the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke. (p. 17)<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-size: 10pt; padding-left: 40px;\">\n<p><strong>Philadelphia GeoFest, 2011:<br \/>\n<\/strong>And by the age of 14, I was the best in the state of Florida. This is elite swimming. There wasn&#8217;t a backstroker faster than me at 100, 200 meters. (<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/32288876#t=5m52s\">5:52<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Find a Way<\/em>, 2015:<\/strong><br \/>\nIt wasn\u2019t long before I was the best back-stroker in the state of Florida. (p. 44)<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arema.org\/files\/roadmasters\/1997\/1997_THE-COURAGE-TO-SUCCEED.pdf\">\u201cThe Courage To Succeed,\u201d<\/a> 1997:<\/strong><br \/>\nIt came to be that when I was 16 years old I won the United States Nationals. I was the best in the United States. Later that summer, I broke the world record for the 100-meter back stroke. I was the best in the world!<br \/>\n(presentation to the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/proceedingsofann102amer\/mode\/2up\">American Railway Bridge &amp; Building Association<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1jtepsAo_vpNxaSIeQJiZaP4KrA0RW7rZ7vYFifI_T2Q\/edit?gid=364971273#gid=364971273\">See this spreadsheet<\/a> for all of Nyad&#8217;s available meet results from 1962 through 1968.<\/p>\n<h3>\u201c[She] became one of the most renowned ocean swimmers in the world.\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>Nyad&#8217;s renown comes not from her accomplishments but from her gift for PR.<\/p>\n<p>The International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame maintains a list of swimming accomplishments they call <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imshof.org\/the-majors-description\">\u201cThe Majors.\u201d<\/a> Diana Nyad has completed four of them and won two. Only one of them, a race from Capri to Naples, took place in the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Nyad never finished a single major solo ocean swim. She once claimed that she completed and broke records in them all:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I became, in the 1970s, the best ocean swimmer in the world. I held all the major records on planet Earth, out in the open sea. (<a href=\"https:\/\/ebellofla.org\/event\/125th-anniversary-opening-day-lunch\/\">Wilshire Ebell<\/a>\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/nyadfactcheck.com\/audio\/2019.10.07.nyad-ebell-records.mp3\">audio clip<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>See <a href=\"https:\/\/nyadfactcheck.com\/details_greatest.html\">\u201cThe Best of the \u201970s\u201d<\/a> for sources and data.<\/p>\n<h3>An Alternative To Diana<\/h3>\n<p>World-record setter <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Katherine_Rawls\">Katherine Rawls<\/a> is a Fort Lauderdale swimmer worthy of a Florida State Historical Marker. No one needs to exaggerate Rawls\u2019 accomplishments:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>She was an inaugural inductee into the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF).<\/li>\n<li>She won U.S. National championships in both swimming and diving. She also won Olympic medals in both sports.<\/li>\n<li>She lived in Fort Lauderdale and trained in the ISHOF\u2019s Casino Pool in the 1930s. She officially opened the Hall&#8217;s new pool in 1965.<\/li>\n<li>A trained pilot, she retired from swimming in 1940 to fly military transport planes with the <a href=\"https:\/\/cafriseabove.org\/the-womens-auxiliary-ferrying-squadron-wafs-wasp\/\"><span class=\"text1\">Women\u2019s Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron<\/span><\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>No one deserves a Florida State Historical Marker more than Katherine Rawls.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;As a child growing up in Fort Lauderdale, Diana Nyad was a champion pool swimmer.&#8221; Nyad won the Florida High School Class A title in the 100-yard backstroke in 1964 and 1967.
