- Manhattan
Diana Nyad was the seventh woman to swim around Manhattan Island. Then she made herself the first. For a short time, she gave up first. And then she made herself first again.
- Marathon Swimming Origin Story
When Nyad was 20 years old, she learned about the sport of marathon swimming from Buck Dawson of the International Swimming Hall of Fame. She also says she learned about the sport from a graduate school friend when she was 24. And 29.

- Academic Freedom
Nyad never earned a graduate degree, but that hasn't stopped her from saying she has a master's or a PhD.
- Coming Out
The Guardian's Carole Cadwalladr once wrote that Nyad "came out as gay in her early
20s, and she's never had any issues about it or tried in any way to hide it." This summary shows Nyad hiding it until at least her late 40s.
- Fifth-Grade Essay
Beginning in the 1970s, Nyad started talking about an essay in which, as a ten-year-old, she exhorted herself to wring the most from every moment.
