Who

Daniel Slosberg was introduced to ocean swimming in 1976 by Lynne Cox at UC Santa Barbara. The following year, he completed a single-crossing of the Catalina Channel. In 1978, he clocked the fastest Catalina double-crossing ever, a record which stood, thanks to his teammate John York, for eleven days.

Slosberg raced the Ironman Triathlon in 1981, where he met Diana Nyad. Reporting for the Wide World of Sports, she interviewed him during the bike leg, asking him something like, “You were doing so well after the swim—what happened?”

His last longish event was in 2010, a 12-mile race from Manhattan Beach to Santa Monica. He got first place in what was probably a field of one, the 50-54-year-old non-wetsuit division.
